Day 359/365 - My Day with Superman

Day 359/365 - My Day with Superman

Awhile back i had stumbled across a documentary called confessions of a superhero. The documentary follows 4 people trying to make it out here in hollywood. While waiting for there big break they dress up as super hero characters posing for photographs from onlookers and tourists on hollywood blvd. I always enjoy quirky docs with interesting subjects so i gave it a shot. The documentary was well done and the subjects were fascinating. I started to wonder if the stars of the movie might still be out on the blvd. This prompted me to venture out and see for myself. I had been to hollywood blvd before but never took the time to capture the characters. The characters are not employed by any business they patrol in front of but accept tips for photos. I was pretty satisfied with my days outing but something was missing. I did not see any of the stars of the movie. Since the movie was made in 2007 i figured it was a slim chance anyway. I then looked up the main focus point of the movie a man who has been portraying superman for over 18 years on the blvd. I was lucky to find that he had a current myspace account and in fact was still posing as the man of steel.

Christopher Dennis is an actor living in hollywood california with his wife bonnie and cat dexter. The apartment is crammed from floor to ceiling with Superman memorabilia -posters, photos, statues, figurines, lamps,
magazines, and films. Being a superhero fan myself i could not help but just stare wildly at his massive collection. It would take months looking though everything he had. He is probably the biggest superman fan in the world. While chris has been in countless movies and television shows he's still looking for that one big break that will hand him in a leading role. Even as far back as the 1920's actors and actresses would put on costumes and come to the Blvd hoping someone in the movie business would would see them.

After contacting Christopher on myspace and told him my plan for a photoshoot he wrote me back telling me it would be no problem. Unlike all my other photoshoots this would be a paid shoot . I really didn't have a problem with it since i was going to be contracting his time. I met him at his apartment in hollywood and we talked superman and the movie for awhile. Its pretty unbelievable how much this guy knows about superman. After hanging out at his apartment and doing a few quick shots we ventured out to the blvd where he was stopped every few feet for a picture or someone just wanting to shake his hand. You would think after 18 years of doing this it would get monotonous but he was gracious to anyone that passed by and taking photos with anyone who would ask. Unlike other characters i encountered Chris never asks for a tip. He even states he doesn't accept tips but accepts donations and it's up to the tourist if they would like to donate. Another thing that struck me as pretty admirable is on the way to the blvd we stopped into a non profit environment museum. Chris introduced me to the lady running the place and grabbed a bunch of flyers to pass out. We ventured around hollywood looking for places to shoot. Chris took me into a fresh n easy where we were kicked out and all the way up to the hollywood sign. By just being around the guy for a day you can tell it's not the thought of fame and fortune that drives him to be superman but the love of the character. He takes his role very seriously even believing on a small level he is superman. He is never to busy to talk to a tourist or even tell a child to listen to their parents and eat their vegetables. Christopher Dennis in my book is a class act and i hope good things for him in the future.
